Koda Kumi – youApril 20, 2013 at 3:29 PM | Posted in Koda Kumi | Leave a comment
Because the singles in Koda Kumi’s ‘BEST ~second session~’ era mostly feature one song, I only review those with B-sides.
Koda Kumi – you
2. Sweet Kiss
3. you (Instrumental)
4. Sweet Kiss (Instrumental)
you is the nineteenth single by Japanese singer Koda Kumi, released on December 7, 2005. The main track was used as “GemCEREY” CM song while “Sweet Kiss” is the Lotte’s “Pure White Gum” CM song. The single reached #1 on Oricon charts, becoming the first #1 single of Koda Kumi’s career. It charted for 15 weeks selling a total of 182,443 units.
Kuu’s leap to stardom was indeed a great one. you was the first single to be released in a special single release period in late 2005 and early 2006, leading up to the best album ‘BEST ~second session~’. I loved that album, and one of my favorite tracks on it was this lovely midtempo ballad. It features a nice arrangement of acoustic guitar, piano, strings and bells, giving it an amazing wintery feel. Kuu’s vocals sound fantastic in this song too, fitting the R&B/pop style this song has. Easily one of the prettiest ballads she ever made.
Sweet Kiss doesn’t sound like an uptempo song when you look at the title, but it actually is a summer pop/dance song (talk about contrast..). In fact, it’s a bit like Chase, especially when you hear the disco arrangement with a lot of brassy elements, but then even more uptempo. I really like this song, I don’t play it very often but I definitely should. It’s not as original as some of her other uptempo summer songs, but it works well enough for me.
