SINGLE REVIEW
BoA – Only One

1. Only One
2. The Shadow
3. Only One (INST)
4. The Shadow (INST)

Only One is the thirty-third Japanese single by South-Korean singer BoA, released on February 27, 2013. It includes the Japanese versions of “Only One” and “The Shadow”, previously released on her Korean album, Only One. The title track was used as the ending theme song for the TV program Takeshi no Nippon no Mikata and as the commercial song for music.jp.

I remember thinking the original version of Only One was one of BoA’s best songs released in a long time, although it took me some time to get used to the fact that this wasn’t as uptempo as I expected. But now I think this midtempo song with its piano melodies and R&B influences (because of the synth riffs in the background) is really cute and it became about time she released the Japanese version. I love to hear BoA sing in Japanese, so this just couldn’t get any better for me.

If you want something with a little more attitude, The Shadow is your go-to song. Very much in the style of songs on her Korean album ‘Hurricane Venus’, with deep beats and a lot of synthesizers in the arrangement, I’m sure the fans of BoA’s electronic songs will enjoy this. Personally, I think Only One packs a punch a bit more, as crazy as it may seem, and it’s good that that song was the A-side, because this song is very much a B-side in any way. Not a bad B-side though, I actually like its attitude!

  1. The song ‘Only One’ is pretty much a classic BoA song. So BoA-ish. 😛 It’s really what made me starting loving her so. ❤
