SINGLE REVIEW
Kalafina – Hikari no Senritsu

1. Hikari no Senritsu
2. sapphire
3. Hikari no Senritsu ~instrumental~

Hikari no Senritsu is the seventh single by Japanese group Kalafina, released on January 20, 2010. The title track was used as the opening theme for the anime Sora no Oto.

Hikari no Senritsu is probably Kalafina’s most upbeat and cute song to date, and although reviews aren’t always positive I’m gonna give a bit of a spoiler already: I LOVE IT. It’s so different, still following the perfect folk style the group completely made their own, but adding more cute and happy elements to the arrangement. HIKARU takes on the verses while WAKANA and KEIKO perform the hooks, and ofcourse I always prefer their parts since it’s simply too perfect. The vocal melodies are to die for, just like the cute little flute solo. I’m a big fan of this song, can you tell?

sapphire is a little heavier on the operatic vocals, but when WAKANA and KEIKO sing together something magical usually happens. That’s exactly the case in this rather simple ballad, which isn’t only quieter but also much shorter than the A-side. After a while HIKARU joins in as well, singing softly with a strings arrangement and piano melody. WAKANA’s shift from chest to head vocals is amazing here. Finally a B-side that is at least as good as its A-side.

I didn’t expect to love this single this much, especially not since the songs on it are complete opposites again. Hikari no Senritsu opted for a more lovely and cute folk style with flute solos and everything, while sapphire was the quiet and harmonic song with operatic vocals. Both are so different, and yet they make for the best single of the entire second era. I already know how much I love the Red Moon album, now I’m gonna let you guys join the fandom if you want, har har.
