4. Butterfly (Instrumental)
5. Your Sunshine (Instrumental)
6. 大切な君へ (Instrumental)

Butterfly is the sixteenth single by Japanese singer Koda Kumi, released on June 22, 2005. The single reached #2 on Oricon charts and charted for 22 weeks. It sold 45,303 units in it’s first week and the most recent figures show that it sold a total of 125,662 units.

If キューティーハニー would’ve had a (somewhat less bombastic) sister, it would’ve been Butterfly. Both songs have a similar sound with a lot of brass instruments, strings and fast percussion, pretty jazzy. Apart from the fact that Kuu pronounces the title word like ~Butterfry~, I probably like this track more than キューティーハニー because I heard that one enough by now and this track is a bit more refreshing.

I get nostalgic vibes when I hear the B-side Your Sunshine, it actually sounds like some of Kuu’s older songs. Maybe a little bit Janet Jackson influenced when it comes to the verses, but that could just be me. There’s not much going on in the song, but it flows nice and it has a catchy R&B flow. No ~Engrish~ this time, at least not as much as in the previous track.

It’s obvious we’re getting a ballad after two uptempo tracks. 大切な君へ is one of Kuu’s best ballads around, mostly because of the beautiful melodies, soothing arrangement and the fatc that Kuu’s a little bit more relaxed here herself. She doesn’t oversing this ballad, her vocals are perfect and quite soft. I like the buildup towards the highlight: the last chorus. The background vocals really made the song shine brighter there.

For a single that would serve mainly as a promo for her first Best album, Butterfly was utterly enjoyable. All three tracks were good, the A-side and ballad track being the best ones. It’s true that Butterfly takes a lot after キューティーハニー but it might be even better, so you won’t hear me nag about that. 大切な君へ would later be featured on Kuu’s ballad best album ~Bounce & Lovers~ so that proves it’s another good track too!
