Mika Nakashima – STARS

2. TEARS (粉雪が舞うように…)
3. STARS (Instrumental)
4. TEARS (粉雪が舞うように…) (Instrumental)

STARS is the debut single by Japanese singer Mika Nakashima, released on November 7, 2001. It reached #3 on the Oricon charts and sold 469,180 units, making it the #34 single of 2002 and her best selling single to date.

STARS is a ballad and I heard she makes quite jazzy music nowadays, so it’s fun to hear she’s incorporating those jazz elements in her music already. I can hear from her voice Mika was still quite young here, I believe she was about my age here so she was probably 18 years old, and she had just a couple of issues with her singing (a little bit insecure). Still, she doesn’t have a bad voice for a young debuting girl, and the overall song is very good and soothing.

Surprisingly enough, TEARS (粉雪が舞うように…) is a very calm ballad too. It’s less jazzy and concentrates more on the dreamy nighttime ambience with a piano, soft background singing and just a little beat that’s not too dominant. Mika’s singing is a little better here as well, although she was never bad in the first place. The feel of this ballad is very harmonious, soothing, and just calm like a sweet lullaby. I actually like it.

Mika Nakashima’s debut single was a huge succes in Japan when it came out in 2001, and I can easily understand why. She still had to take some singing lessons I believe, but other great singers like Ayu had the very same issues so you won’t hear me nag about it any longer. I can’t really tell what her musical style is right now after two soothing ballad tracks (yes, these are my first Mika songs) I expect something poppy with some elements of jazz. Should be nice, so I’m gonna give this girl a shot.
