SINGLE REVIEW
BENI – 永遠

1. 永遠
2. 最後の嘘
3. 永遠 (Instrumental)
4. 最後の嘘 (Instrumental)

永遠 is the 22nd single by Japanese American singer BENI, released on January 25, 2012. The title track was used as the theme song for the drama Honjitsu wa Taian Nari. The music video for this single was shot in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.The single charted at #44 on the Oricon Charts on the first day of sale.

BENI has become one of my favorite singers with her ‘Fortune’ era, so she’s gonna have to prove herself now. Lucky for me, 永遠 sounds GREAT from the start. The piano and strings intro instantly create a lighthearted and magical feel, and I love BENI’s singing melody in this song. All there was missing was a beat, but it came a little later and was perfect for the song. I like how the musical arrangement builds from just a piano to adding strings, percussion and later even some synths. If I have to describe what this song sounds like in one word, it will be ‘magic’.

The A-side is a midtempo track, 最後の嘘 is a real ballad mostly ruled by the piano and a soft fingersnap beat. It’s a nice song, but a bit of a disappointment after 永遠 which I totally LOVED. The verses are pretty and a bit soulful/jazzy like BoA’s ‘Romance’, but then the chorus sounds a little out of place. It’s still a pretty ballad but I prefer the A-side over this one.

BENI totally lived up to my expectations with 永遠 because it was another one of her R&B midtempo’s, which I just can’t get enough of. I enjoy the sound of her voice so much, that even the B-side isn’t a terribly plain track. She really gave that song her best shot, she put in everything she’s got and I can really tell by listening to the song, but based on the comparison with the A-side it’s the ‘meh’ track. I really hope 永遠 will be on her next best album, to be released on March 14, 2012!
